Caniac Collector Extra ! Canes Corner with Noah Freakin Hanifin

Hello Friends. I have always considered myself a husband and father before a hockey fan. With that being said last night I had the opportunity to take my daughter to meet her favorite player on the Canes Noah Hanifin. She has recently began attending Canes games with me and decided Noah Hanifin is her favorite Hurricane. "Why ?" you ask. Is it because he just made his first All-Star appearance? No it is not. Is it because he has the potential to be a great defenseman? That's a big negative. Is it because the share a birthday? Possibly, but no. It's because she thinks he is cute (If you listen carefully you can hear daddy's palm slap his forehead). As a parent I was a little nervous taking my child to meet her hero. I had a bad encounter with a favorite athlete of mine at a signing when I was a kid, and found it heartbreaking to realize someone could be so cold to their fans. Nevertheless I decided to take her and let it play out, and what we found out was the he couldn't of been more kind and gracious with her. Even going so far as to wish her a Happy Birthday when she told them they shared a birthday in January, and talking to her while he signed her photo.
 

Later on when I went up for my turn for signatures, I thanked him for his graciousness with my daughter, and he simply replied with " That's what I am supposed to do." He Later signed a few more items for both of us( pictured below), but I will never forget the first encounter my daughter had with her favorite player. Eric Staal is the most Underappreciated Hurricane of All Time

  Eric Staal 2014-2015 Upper Deck Premier Rink of Honor     In case you did not hear already, Carolina Hurricanes Legend Eric Staal has been named the Captain of The Canadian Men's Olympic Hockey team. I tell you that to tell you this, beyond being a Justin Faulk Collector I also collect Eric Staal. The Former 2nd Overall Pick (2002), Stanley Cup Champ, the arguably legitimate Conn Smythe Winner with 28 points in 25 Games, and former Hurricanes Captain has managed to etch out a borderline Hall of Fame Career.   However, even with all that listed I would argue that Eric Staal remains the most underrated and underappreciated Carolina Hurricane of all time.  Why? Eric Staal's captaincy happened in the midst of turmoil. Having it given to him with the stripping of perennial favorite and current Canes Bench Boss Rod Brindamour's Captaincy in the middle of the 2010 season.      Dont thank me for my service! I did not join for gratitude! I was a 23 year old single dad who had ran out of options to support his son. I needed an escape from a bad situation and the United States Navy provided it for me. Now 12 years later I along with many other veterans battle the long term effects of what at time can be crippling Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).In my daily profession it was implied that I should not write about or discuss my PTSD because it could make people uneasy and uncomfortable around me!
