Don't be a Complaniac: Thoughts from Summerfest and Free Agency

Remember that Nazareth son from the 1970's titled "Love Hurts". It can easily be used to sum up the life of a fan of ANY pro sports team, and just like any love story emotional attachments are formed between fans and a player. However like many love stories throughout history bonds are broken for the betterment of all parties involved. When that happens there are two ways to recover. The first way is to complain using revisionist history about how good things were and never let it go sullying any chance of a healthy bond forming with anyone new. The second way is to learn to accept the change and hope for the betterment. I find it disheartening to see nothing but criticism and complaining from fans who either choose to refuse to accept change, let go of 2006( it was a great year but in the distant past), or complain about the state of the team then complain when changes are made involving their favorite players. All I am saying is order to improve the future sometimes we have to let go of the past, and in the end sports are supposed to be fun. Don't take things so seriously, don't attack players on social media (Seriously the stuff I seen people tweet to Scott Darling last season made me sick), and just enjoy the ride.

On A more positive note this years Summerfest was a success, and I would like to thank the Canes event team for setting it up an operating it so smoothly. Compared to the Draft Party it was an absolute delight. On the ice three names grabbed my attention, So here are my 3 stars of the prospects game. The first of course was this years Number 2 Overall draft pick Andrei Svechnikov. Svechnikov showed great chemistry on a line with Martin Necas even going as far as to bring their side back from a 4 goal deficit in the last 8 minutes of the game. What stuck out to me about Svechnikov the most was the effortlessness within his transition game from offense to defense due to his efficient and somewhat beautiful skating. If he develops as expected Canes Fans could be looking at a potential Selke Candidate down the line for two way play.

The Second player that stuck out to me was Center Martin Necas. It is no secret the Canes are in need of a Center and "Naitch" as I think he should be nicknamed could eventually fit the roll quite well. Coming into camp this summer significantly bigger than last season I will be interested to see how he plays with fellow Canes not named Svechnikov.

Morgan Geekie was quite the surprise in the prospect game. I was aware of his over a point per game performance (84 points in 68 games) with the Tri-City Americans. Yet the skepticism as to whether that could be done against men remained. Geekie showed a strong ability to get to the net netting two goals during the prospect game and showing a strong net front presence.

Harvard Defenseman Adam Fox had a strong showing as well dishing out 3 assists during the prospect game.

I have been rather pleased with the improvements the team has made so far this offseason, and now here comes the hardest part of any NHL fans year. The dry spell between now and training camp. Thanks for reading and Redvolution
