Forgotten Canes: "The Wrath of Kron" How A Former Cane is helping Forge the Future

When the name Robert Kron is mentioned memories of the first team that came from Hartford with Kevin Dineen who is mentioned in another Blogpost( Click Here for more on Kevin Dineen), Trevor Kidd, who I have also covered (A Forgotten Canes Netminder) , and Glenn Wesley. Now while each of the aforementioned Canes players have left an indelible mark in Carolina Hurricanes History. I'm willing to bet Robert Kron's mark will be the one rooted deepest when its all said an done. However, in order to see the future we must remember the past.

Robert Kron was drafted by  the Vancouver Canucks in the 5th round of the 1985 Entry Draft. The Czech Native spent parts of 3 seasons with the Canucks (1990-1993) with the team before being traded to the Hartford Whalers midway through the 1992-1993 season. Kron would remain with the Whalers through the remainder of the teams tenure in Hartford and make the move to Carolina with the team in 1997.

In 3 seasons in Carolina, Kron appeared in 237 games and tallied 101 points ( 38 goals and 63 assists) in his 3 full seasons in Raleigh. In the 2000 Expansion Draft Kron was left unprotected by the team and selected by the Expansion Columbus Blue Jackets. Kron would play 2 seasons in Columbus before finishing his career overseas.

So why do I believe Robert Kron will leave the biggest mark on the Canes of all the former Whalers? Because since 2007 Robert Kron has been a scout for the organization, and is the head of European scouting for the team. Now before you say " Hold up! Mr. Caniac Collector the team has been mired in mediocrity for over a decade. So how good has he really been?" Allow me to remind you that scouting is not a direct science, and this is the same team who just hired Rod Brindamour to be the bench boss, even though he has been an assistant during the same period of mediocrity. (See my thoughts on the Brindamour hire by clicking the following link here Brindamour Of The Same?)

The reason I believe when its all said and done Kron's legacy as a scout will be dignified lies in three players Sebastian Aho, Martin Necas and Andrei Svechnikov. Robert Kron was the primary scout involved in the selection of both players. Now while Svechnikov was a clear no brainer at number 2 overall,  Sebastian Aho was seen as more of a diamond in the rough pick selected in the 2nd round and heavily endorsed by Kron. Now while Kron does not deserve the credit for Aho's development, an eye for unseen talent on a young and hopefully on the rise team is a valuable commodity. As for Martin Necas a strong showing in the World Juniors coupled with a very obvious chemistry with the aforementioned Svechnikov in prospect camp has a lot of members of the Redvolution buzzing. Now while Kron is in no way responsible for their on-ice development and eye for talent on a hopefully up and coming team is invaluable. Thanks for reading a Redvolution.
