Forgotten Canes: Kevyn Adams is The Third Man


Quick! Can you name the three Captains of the 2006 Stanley Cup Winning Carolina Hurricanes?  Well lets see there was that years Selke Winner Rod Brind'amour wearing the "C". Blue Line Leader and Defensive Stalwart Glen Wesley wearing one of the Alternates, now who was that third man? Was it the only Hall-of-Famer on the team Mark "Wrecking Ball" Recchi? No he was a mid-season acquisition. Ok then it must have been up and coming future captain and the teams leading scorer Eric Staal right? Wrong again! The answer you are looking for is Kevyn (not a typo) Adams.

Drafted by the Boston Bruins 25th overall in 1993, Kevyn Adams came to Carolina in a trade midway through the 2001-2002 NHL Season. Traded from the Florida Panthers along with Bret Hedican and Tomas Malec for Sandis Ozolinsh and Byron Ritchie, Adams became a fixture on a veteran laden team that would soon make a surprising Stanley Cup Final Run. Never a "star" in the NHL. Adams did the dirty work that earned him the respect of his teammates and fans alike. At 5'11" Adams wasn't afraid to go into the corners, kill penalties or make his presence known on the ice.

Unsurprisingly Adams best season came in 2005-2006 where scored 15 goals and had 8 assists for 23 points en-route to hoisting the Stanley Cup. Midway through the following season he was dealt to the then Phoenix Coyotes for Dennis Seidenberg. Adams left  Carolina having played 300 games scoring 38 goals and contributing 34 assists for 72 points. Adams time in Phoenix was brief as he was shipped to Chicago for Radim Vrbata and released on the eve of the 2008 NHL Season.

Adams retired after the 2009 season to become an agent but the lure of the game called him back as he served as an assistant coach for the Buffalo Sabres from 2011-2013. Today he is on staff at The Academy of Hockey in Upstate New York as the Director of Player Development.

While his on ice career will never be considered overwhelming Adams has his name etched into the marquee trophy in sports and will forever be a member of the Redvolution! Thanks for Reading and Redvolution!

Forgotten Canes: Mike Commodore and his bathrobe.

Whether he is flying up the ice with his trademark red afro flowing behind him, warming up during the pregame of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in his bathrobe, or continuing his personal feud through his entertaining Twitter Account ( seriously folks follow this guy on Twitter @Commie22) with Maple Leafs Coach Mike Babcock eccentric would be a fair word to describe Former Canes Defenseman Mike Commodore. Commodore signed with Carolina in 2005 after bouncing between the New Jersey Devils and Lowell Lock Monsters (AHL) the previous 2 seasons A staple on the blue-line during the  Stanley Cup Championship of 2006, Commodore was a hard nosed stay at home defenseman Commodore was second amongst defenseman in points with during the magical season that was 2006. Commodore provided the physical presence needed serving 138 penalty minutes while remaining second on the team in +/- at 10. It's Cardboard Therapy!

     Dont thank me for my service! I did not join for gratitude! I was a 23 year old single dad who had ran out of options to support his son. I needed an escape from a bad situation and the United States Navy provided it for me. Now 12 years later I along with many other veterans battle the long term effects of what at time can be crippling Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).In my daily profession it was implied that I should not write about or discuss my PTSD because it could make people uneasy and uncomfortable around me!
