Card of the Week: Justin Williams goes to Glamour Shots!

Any child of the mid-nineties mall scene will remember Glamour Shots! Those niche photo studios in the mall where any patron willing to throw down a significant amount of coin, would be made over and given a photo shoot, that were often reserved for ones Senior Pictures. As a child of the nineties I remember these things being all the rage, but then again so were Zubaz pants, Acid Wash Jeans, and the mullet. Needless to say the fashions and fads of the 1990's should never make a come back!

Well long before he was the Carolina Hurricanes elder statesman and Captain. Long before he was "Mr Game Seven". Justin Williams was just a young hockey player known for his toughness and high hockey IQ! Now as a fellow "Child of the Nineties" I can not verify whether or not Justin Williams ever partook in the monstrocity known as Glamour Shots. However, 2007 The Be A Player Line of cards decided to get Up Close & Personal ( Also a bad movie from the 90's) with an insert card featuring the then 26 year old Carolina Hurricanes Forward. Now while there are many ways Be A Player could of taken these cards. They chose to go the Glamour Shots route, and take a picture on a black backdrop making Justin Williams look more beatnik then hockey player. The soft smile and lighting make the card look more like a Tinder Profile Pic than the card of a future three time Stanley Cup Winner and Conn Smythe trophy recipient.

The  downside of this ridiculous looking card is that it is numbered to 1000 meaning that while there is a lot of them out there it was not as mass  produced as other cards in the era were. Yet any Justin Williams collector should pick up this card solely for the laughs it produces.

On a positive note the Canes continue to shock the hockey World with their recent sweep of the New York Islanders as they await the winner of the Columbus Blue Jackets/ Boston Bruin Series to meet them in the Eastern Conference Finals. Regardless of the outcome of the following series the Hurricanes have over achieved based on their preseason expectations, and Williams should be the front-runner for the Mark Messier Leadership Award. So until the Canes play again enjoy the ride they are on and have a laugh at the teams current captain cheesing like a 1990's teenager! Thanks for reading and Redvolution!
