Don't Be A Complainiac: Sports are supposed to be fun. "What Does A N****r Know About Hockey Anyways?"

Two weeks ago I wrote a blog post titled Don't Be A Complainiac: Fixing the Carolina Hurricanes Is Not as Easy As You Think. Like always I received alot of positive feedback as discussion about it via Twitter.

However, I got a rather insidious and hateful message in my DM's that told me I should "stick to watching basketball" and asked me "What does a N****r know about hockey anyways?" Now I won't share this persons' Twitter handle because I refuse to give ignorance a spotlight however, I will say that this person has seen me in person many times at the PNC Arena and never once approached me face to face to discuss his disagreements with my writing.

This leads me to remind everyone that sports are supposed to be fun ,and it seems to me alot of the Hurricanes fans I come across have forgotten that! Yes I know the team is wildly inconsistent! I know the team is in the midst of an embarrassing playoff drought. Yet at day's end sports are something we're supposed to watch to relax, and have fun with. If you find yourself basing your happiness off how your favorite team performs you are living life wrong.

We all have many positive things we should be focusing on even in the midst of a team slump skid or losing season. I have a beautiful wife, 3 amazing children, a job I'm very passionate about, a roof over my head, and food on my table. So a losing streak doesn't send me into a big enough rage to have me attacking players on Twitter, booing them at the arena, or just being an overall miserable fan!

Speaking of attacking player via social media. " When I was in the military I had a saying. " If what you say to someone in uniform could, should or would get your ass kicked in civilian attire! Then you probably shouldn't say it." The same applies to Twitter and other social media platforms where "fans" become emboldened behind a screen. These players are people too with families and lives so attacking them on social media after a bad night on the ice is the equivalent to you being attacked after a bad day at work, and God knows noone would like that!

The outcome of these games should have no bearing on our happiness or emotional well being. Sure it's frustrating to see your team come out flat and lose to a team of lesser caliber, but if it ruins your day to the point of anger. Maybe you should find another release besides hockey.

Now I'm not saying that we should be ecstatic over the erratic play of the team recently. What I am saying is the grand scheme of life it really shouldn't affect us to the point of anger or personal attacks.

The NHL season is full of ebbs and flows and ups and downs and when it's all said and done in June only one teams fanbase will be Happy! So I challenge all fans to simply enjoy the ride don't take losses to personal, and be patient because the team is slowly improving and it won't be long till they are a competitive team throughout the entire year. So to answer that persons question I may not know much about hockey, but I think I have a clue on how to live life the right way and not take sports to seriously!

Thanks for reading and Redvolution!

  1. It's articles like these that attempt to breed a culture of mediocrity. We should not be okay about not being in the playoffs for 9 years (soon to be 10). No, I absolutely disagree. If you're some hometown, non-competitive family man then have at the whole "its just a game!" mentality. It's not for me or anyone else I know who wants to win. Stop accepting mediocrity. That's how we'll win.

    1. Thanks for reading first of all! Second of all never said I was happy with it. I just said I have a lot bigger and better things in my life to focus on. I'm in no way accepting mediocrity. I'm just saying there are bigger things in life than my hockey teams performance. So I pity people like you who base your happiness on a teams performance. It really is a safe way to live your life.
