It's Team Card Night at the PNC. So Lets Review the Team Set!

Last Night at the PNC Arena, The Carolina Hurricanes hosted their annual team card giveaway set. Every fan received a package of 2018- 2019 Upper Deck Carolina Hurricanes "Team Set" cards. The only thing was it was not a full team set as each package only had 6 cards mainly from Upper Deck Series One, and mine was missing Justin Faulk, Calvin DeHaan, Petr Mrazek, and Curtis McElhinney off the checklist. However, even being shortchanged on the "team set concept" The overall premise of  the promotion was knocked out of the park due to a few minor adjustments I loved!

1. Slight Variations to the look of the card

The traditional Upper Deck Card as seen on the right has metallic look to the logo as well as the team insignia. It provides a shiny and reflective look to the card that is appealing to me as a collector. The team set issue provides more color on the logo reminding me of the Upper Deck Cards I collected when I was a kid. The full color Upper Deck Logo and Hurricanes Logo grab the attention of a non-traditional collector and provide an appealing alternate look to the card

2. Updates to Current Cards and Variations

The photo on the pack issued Justin Williams card (left) was taken last year during the 2017-2018 season. This is indicated by the missing "C" on his sweater. While this is a change that only someone looking for it would notice, the different picture provided on the team released set appeals to collectors who appreciate difference in variety in their collections. That card as well as the aforemention Teuvo Teravainen team issued card serve as almost a "short print" version of a card that collectors such as myself love to come across. So to find it in a free pack of team cards served as a real treat for me.

3. A  "Unique" Andrei Svechnikov card

As most collectors know Upper Deck does not "give "anything away. Every promotion Upper Deck has, serves as a way to try and get more money out of your pocket. In this case it was done by offering an exclusive card of the teams hot shot rookie Andrei Svechnikov with the purchase of a pack of Upper Deck Series 1 from the team store. So after I swiped my debit card I was surprised to see what was handed to me by the clerk. The exclusive card is the exact same photo and stock used for the Andrei Svechnikov Young Guns card seen on the left, the only difference is the Young Guns logo has been removed and the Upper Deck logo is on the the other side of the card and in color. Normally I would find an "exclusive" like this to be the easy way out however, in this case I like it. The Young Guns cards are THE rookie card a lot of collectors hunt down so to have basically an altered Young Guns of a hot young rookie makes me appreciate the card.

On a more important note the Canes handled the Minnesota Wild quite easy giving the over 16000 fans at the PNC Arena a lot to be happy about as they maintain control of  a Wild Card spot going into late March. While I am not quite ready to exhale and plan for playoff hockey just yet. The teams post Christmas run has been something to enjoy and take notice of giving me hope for the future of hockey in Raleigh. Thanks for reading and Redvolution!
